Why Is Buying Art Important?

Buying art has many positive influences on you and your space. It should be stated of course, that I hope to sell my art, but buying art is personal. This blog entry is about all artists, what you like and love about an artist is different for each person. Having art in the home and sharing it with others is the point of this blog entry.

Art Affects Your Mood

Art doesn’t just give us pleasure, it can cause us sadness, excitement, fear, discomfort and a range of other emotions. The proof that art effects us is seen in these papers, here, here and here. It proves how inconsequential it is to squabble or make fun of a person for loving a certain piece of art in their home. In the end they choose to live with it and if it gives them happiness, who are we to question it. In art there are certain truths and logic that allow you to know this artist has talent. But there are many things that can attract you to an artwork, how it captivates you, it is by far the hardest to gauge by other people, but you will know when it happens.

Every Picture Is A Story

Paintings are an expression of a particular moment in an artists life. That moment will never come back again, because as human beings we are changing constantly. The painting tells an intimate story of the thoughts, feelings and perceptions of the artist at that time. All human beings are on life’s journey, filled with many stories that capture unique moments in time. If an artist has their paintings around their home, they are constantly reminded of where they came from and what they were expressing at various time through their art. One day if an artists work is known and exhibited, not only does it represent a generation, but possibly an era. Art in general is one of the remaining artifacts of the past along with personal affects and buildings of our ancestors. What art allows us to do is look into the past, so we gain a better understanding of how our ancestors thought and lived. You realise that though there is a lot of time between us, there are many elements that bind us together.

Start Small

Using art as an investment strategy is not feasible, unless you are wealthy. Just by buying an artwork for a million dollars already changes how we look at a specific artist. It gives that artist fame and puts them on the map. Possibly attracting other investors into buying this artist’s other works. For people that are that wealthy, they are diversifying their investment portfolio and possibly doing it for other reasons. It isn’t a secret that some art works are bought for money laundering reasons. Unless you are wealthy art lover or a business man, buy art for the love of it. Artists are encouraged to have small artworks not only to allow their fans to buy their work, but it allows new people to buy their work without taking a large risk. Buying a small artwork, still allows you to see how the artwork looks in real life, how it makes you feel and how it works in your home. For more well known artists they have prints that less costly. It isn’t the same thing, but if you are fan of a well known artist, it allows you to own some of their work and have it in your space. Some artists have end of year sales to make room in their studio, you may be able to buy an original artwork for a price you can afford. Art has a profound effect on us and our spaces, it is important that we fill our walls with things that we love.
